 Zoon talks about her mother-in-law's harsh
treatment towards her to her village mates. She grew up in the midst of
the saffron fields and in the shade of the chinar trees. She was not
raised as a typical peasant girl. She had learnt how to read and write
from the village moulvi. At an early age her father married her to a
peasant boy. But this illiterate peasant boy could not keep Zoon happy.
He could not understand the longings of her heart.

 Zoon sings:

Her husband and mother-in-law make her life
miserable as her married life goes from bad to worse.

|
 A neighbor drops by to feed Zoon who has been
starved by her in-laws. The fight between her in-laws and the neighbors
is a sight to watch. A panchayat is called where it is decided that the
annulment of marriage is the only solution left.

|
 Zoon goes back to her home with her father. She
is extremely depressed and wants to end her life. As she tries to drown
herself, a passerby rescues her.

 Her father takes her to a peer sahib (ascetic)
who is impressed with her poetry and singing talents. He renames Zoon as
Habba Khatoon.

|
 Habba Khatoon sings in the shade of a chinar
tree. One day Yusuf Shah Chak is out hunting that way on horseback. He
happens to pass the place where she is singing under the chinar tree. He
hears her melancholic melodies. He is stunned by her beauty. As soon as
their eyes meet, they fall in love.

 Yusuf Shah Chak proposes to her. They get
married. Her life changes dramatically for the better - from a simple
peasant but talented girl who was abused by her in-laws to becoming the
queen of Kashmir.

 Yusuf Shah
Chak, like Habba Khatoon, is a lover
of music. He ruled Kashmir same time as Jaluludin Akbar, the Mughal
emperor, ruled India.

 Akbar is interested in conquering Kashmir to
make it part of his kingdom. Yusuf Shah Chak is too engrossed in his
love for music that he ignores the threats, only to be reminded by Habba
Khatoon of his duties to protect his subject.

 After Akbar gets defeated in his attempts to
grab Kashmir by force, he makes Raja Bhagwan Dass send his envoy to
Yusuf Shah Chak for a peace treaty. Habba Khatoon doesn't trust Akbar's
intentions and pleads her husband not to go to meet Akbar. But he
doesn't listen.

|
 Akbar trecherously invites Yusuf Shah Chak to
discuss a peace treaty only to imprison him. This marks the beginning of
Mughal's rule in Kashmir, and end of Habba Khatoon's happiness. The
songs of Habba Khatoon are full of the sorrow of separation. It is
claimed that Habba Khatun introduced the lol into tho Kashmiri
(language).
